Saint Getulius: A Soldier of Faith and Martyr for Christ
June 10, 2025 | Feast Day of Saint Getulius
Today, on June 10th, we celebrate the feast day of Saint Getulius, a Roman soldier turned Christian martyr whose courage and unwavering faith continue to inspire believers across the centuries. His story is one of transformation, conviction, and ultimate sacrifice—a powerful reminder that true discipleship often comes at a great cost, yet yields eternal rewards. Join us as we explore the life of Saint Getulius, his bold witness, and the lessons his legacy offers for our own spiritual journeys.

A Soldier’s Conversion
Saint Getulius lived during the early 2nd century, a time when the Roman Empire was at its zenith, and Christianity was still a fledgling faith, often met with suspicion and persecution. As a Roman officer of considerable rank and learning, Getulius held a position of prominence in a society that valued military prowess and loyalty to the emperor. Stationed near Tivoli, Italy, he was a man of influence, respected for his leadership and intellect.
Yet, something stirred in Getulius’ heart. The message of Christ—radical, transformative, and countercultural—reached him, and he could not ignore its call. In a bold act of faith, Getulius resigned his commission, choosing to follow Jesus rather than the imperial standards of Rome. He retired to his estates near Tivoli, where he lived with his wife, Saint Symphorosa, and their seven sons, later known as the Seven Martyrs of Tivoli. Together, they created a home centered on Christian values, nurturing a family dedicated to God.
Getulius’ conversion was not a quiet one. His decision to leave his military post and embrace Christianity was a public statement, one that drew attention in a world where allegiance to the emperor was non-negotiable. His story challenges us to consider: What are we willing to give up for our faith? Are there positions, comforts, or statuses in our lives that we cling to, even when they conflict with our call to follow Christ?
A Witness That Converted Others
The Roman authorities did not take kindly to Getulius’ defection. Under the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117–138 AD), who enforced strict adherence to pagan worship, Getulius’ faith made him a target. Two imperial legates were dispatched to arrest him, likely expecting a straightforward mission to subdue a rebellious officer. But Getulius’ faith was contagious. His deep conviction and fearless proclamation of the Gospel moved the legates, Cerealis and Amantius, to convert to Christianity themselves. Alongside another companion, Primitivus, they joined Getulius in standing firm for their newfound faith.
This remarkable turn of events speaks to the power of a life transformed by Christ. Getulius didn’t just profess his faith; he lived it in a way that inspired others to risk everything for the truth. His witness reminds us that our actions, words, and courage can ripple outward, drawing others closer to God. Who in our lives might be watching, waiting for a glimpse of authentic faith? How can we, like Getulius, embody the Gospel so boldly that it sparks transformation in others?
The Ultimate Sacrifice
The conversion of the legates only intensified the authorities’ resolve to crush this growing Christian defiance. Getulius, along with Cerealis, Amantius, and Primitivus, faced brutal persecution under the orders of Licinius, a consular official. According to tradition, they were subjected to torture, including being thrown into flames. Miraculously, Getulius and his companions emerged unscathed from the fire, a testament to God’s power and presence even in the face of death. Undeterred, their persecutors resorted to clubbing them to death, sealing their martyrdom on the Salarian Way near Rome.
Getulius’ martyrdom was not the end of his family’s witness. His wife, Saint Symphorosa, and their seven sons would later face their own trials, each offering their lives for Christ. The collective sacrifice of this family stands as a powerful symbol of unity in faith, reminding us that discipleship is often a communal journey, shared with those we love and strengthened by mutual encouragement.
Lessons from Saint Getulius for Today
Saint Getulius’ life offers several profound lessons for modern Christians navigating a world that can feel increasingly hostile to faith:
- Courage to Stand Apart: Getulius’ decision to resign his military post required immense bravery. In a culture that demands conformity, his story challenges us to stand firm in our convictions, even when it means walking away from worldly success or approval.
- The Power of Witness: Getulius’ faith was so compelling that it led others, including his would-be captors, to Christ. Our lives, too, can be a testimony that draws others to God, whether through words, actions, or the quiet strength of our convictions.
- Trust in God’s Protection: The miraculous preservation of Getulius in the flames reminds us that God’s power transcends even the most dire circumstances. While we may not always be spared physical harm, we can trust in God’s eternal presence and purpose.
- Family as a Foundation of Faith: Getulius and Symphorosa raised their children in a home grounded in Christian devotion, preparing them to face persecution with courage. Their example encourages us to nurture faith within our families, creating a legacy of discipleship that endures.

A Prayer to Saint Getulius
As we honor Saint Getulius on his feast day, let us pray for the strength to emulate his courage and fidelity:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life and witness of Saint Getulius, who laid down his earthly honors to take up the cross of Christ. Grant us the courage to follow his example, standing firm in our faith and sharing Your love with those around us. May his intercession inspire us to live boldly for You, trusting in Your strength even in the face of trials. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
Living Like Getulius
As we reflect on Saint Getulius’ life, let’s ask ourselves: How can we embody his boldness in our daily lives? Perhaps it’s speaking truth in a difficult conversation, prioritizing faith over convenience, or mentoring others in their spiritual journey. Whatever form it takes, Getulius’ story calls us to live as soldiers of Christ—rooted in faith, resolute in purpose, and ready to sacrifice for the glory of God.
Let us celebrate Saint Getulius today by recommitting to our own discipleship, trusting that, like him, we are never alone in our journey. His life reminds us that the path of faith may lead through trials, but it always leads to the heart of Christ.
Saint Getulius, pray for us!
